	Cotman (John Sell) (1782-1842)
	Born in Norwich, John Sell Cotman lived at different times in London, Norwich and Great Yarmouth for some years before returning home in 1823 to open a School of drawing. He moved back to London early in 1834. The style of Cotman’s work went through a number of changes that are well illustrated in this exhibition. Throughout his career Cotman was a highly original painter of watercolour. In 1798 Cotman moved to London, found work with leading print publisher Ackerman and was patronised by Dr Thomas Monro.		By 1800 he had his first exhibition at the Royal Academy and was awarded the Greater Silver Pallet of the Society of Arts. During 1800 he conducted a sketching tour of Wales and in 1803, 04 & 05 he toured Yorkshire to create some of his finest Watercolour paintings. In 1807 he exhibited for the first time with the Norwich Society of Artists and was elected President of the Norwich Society of Artists in 1833. He took up the position of Professor of Drawing at King’s College School, London in 1834. www.museums.norfolk.gov.uk
